Job Description

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Under general supervision constructs, installs, repairs, and maintains all electrical systems in all City buildings and facilities. In addition, performs the repairs, maintenance and rewiring of City owned street and sports lights. Also, operates vehicles and equipment needed to do the work required.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Electrician. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

  • Repair street and sports lights.
  • Repair electrical equipment, central operating equipment, and registers.
  • Run underground cables and string overhead wires.
  • Wire buildings and make additions to existing wiring.
  • Install and repair fluorescent, industrial and general lighting fixtures and connections.
  • Install and maintain remote control devices for magnetic motor connections.
  • Install, adjust and maintain utility motors and appliances.
  • Install and repair electrical switches and relays.
  • Install electric call bells and buzzers.
  • Repair and maintain electrical motors.
  • Adjust water controls and time clock automatics.
  • Estimate time and materials for lift station electrical jobs and keeps records.
  • Locate underground cables.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Thorough understanding of the principles and practices of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of approved methods, materials and the tools used in the electrical construction industry.
  • Ability to work in new facilities, as well as, remodeling, repairing and maintaining existing buildings.
  • Must be fully aware of the occupational hazards and adhere to the safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and standards guiding the industry.
  • Ability to read and work from plans.
  • Ability to understand and follow specifications and supervisory directions and instructions.
  • Capable of directing those assisting in the task.
  • Ability to use the tools and equipment necessary for the job.
  • Must be courteous, respectful and able to deal with co-workers and City residents while carrying out assigned duties.
  • Able to work with a bucket truck and lift for lighting repairs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a master or journeyman electrician.
  • Obtain a valid Florida C.D.L. “B” driver license within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must have a Miami-Dade County Certificate of Competency (Maintenance Card issued by Miami-Dade County).
