Job Summary

The Food Safety and Quality Assurance Coordinator (FSQA Coordinator) will act as the Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) for Human Food and Animal Food and/or Safe Quality Foods (SQF) Practitioner for the site(s) and will manage overall development, implementation, review and maintenance of the Food & Feed Safety Management Systems and the Quality Assurance Management System. This position will require travel to other Michigan Sugar Company facilities, as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Food & Animal Feed Safety and Quality Assurance – Leads cross-functional team members, including site management, and other required personnel, in developing, implementing and reviewing site policies and procedures, related to the Food & Feed Safety Systems and Quality Management Systems. Supports the establishment of corporate policies and procedures. Ensures products shipped from the facility meet all regulatory, internal, and customer specifications. Is the site point of contact for Food & Feed Safety and Quality Assurance escalations.
  • Food & Feed Safety Plans and Site Management Reviews – Conducts review of plans and revises plans, as required. Leads/facilitates FSQA meetings and site management reviews.
  • Training - Develops and oversees the employee training program as it relates to Food & Feed Safety. Provides annual orientation and refresher trainings, and ensures completion of specific job training. Maintains training skills registers and training records. Provides/facilitates trainings as necessary.
  • Corrective Actions and Preventive Actions (CAPAs) - Documents CAPAs related to Food & Feed Safety and Quality Assurance, works with team members to ensure that CAPAs are completed.
  • Customer Complaints – Works with appropriate Departments to investigate Customer Complaints. Works with Customer Service Representatives on providing solutions to the affected Customer.
  • Integrated Pest Management – Oversees the 3 rd party managed Integrated Pest Management Program. Reviews reports, issues work orders/corrective actions and monitors trends.
  • Management of Change – Conducts reviews for necessary changes to the Food & Feed Safety System. Approves process or equipment changes (from a food safety standpoint) and performs/facilitates validation studies. Updates documentation, as necessary.
  • Document Control - Maintains documents for the Food & Feed Safety Systems. Reviews documents, issues updates, tracks changes, and revises documents as necessary.
  • Crisis Management – Is a member of the Crisis Management Team. Schedules, conducts and /or facilitates mock crisis exercises.
  • Food Defense and Food Fraud - Oversees the development, review and maintenance of the Food Defense Plan. Supports Corporate FSQA Team with the Food Fraud Program.
  • Mock Recall and Traceability Program – Directs and reviews trace exercises. Documents findings, issues corrective actions and follows-up as needed.
  • Foreign Material Program –Manages the foreign material program. Reviews foreign material inspection logs, preventive control monitoring records, and ensures appropriate disposition for contaminated/ suspect product.
  • Non-conforming Product/Hold Program – Ensures the effectiveness of the Non-Conforming Product/Hold Program and has final disposition authority with consultation from Corporate FSQA, if needed.
  • Internal & external audits and self-inspections – Manages the internal audit program. Facilitates and partners in internal audits and self-inspections to mitigate potential food or feed safety risks. Is the primary auditee during certification and customer audits, and regulatory inspections. Communicates audit/inspection results to management and ensures follow-up of audit non-conformances.
  • Verification and Validation Programs – Oversees the overall validation, effectiveness review, and verification of program documents, forms, and records. Ensures verifications are accurate and complete.
  • Calibration – Manages the site calibration program and ensures timely completion of calibrations for equipment related to Food Safety.
  • Water and Air Quality – Obtains annual city water report. Ensures site samples are taken for analysis and reviews test results with Environmental to ensure compliance.

Position Qualifications

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Biology, Food Science or related field preferred.
  • Food & beverage, animal food, or pharmaceutical experience is preferred.
  • 2 years Food Safety or Quality Management Systems experience preferred.
