Job Description

Senior Underwriter – Medical

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for performing accurate and timely financial analysis to support pricing and oversight of medical, stop-loss, and ancillary products for fully insured and self-funded health plans. This role also involves mentoring underwriting team members and ensuring smooth operational workflows and adherence to compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops new business and renewal proposals, including stop-loss quotes and comprehensive plan renewals.
  • Analyzes claims experience and utilization data to identify trends and support future pricing strategies.
  • Oversees day-to-day activities and workflow of assigned analysts and underwriting support staff.
  • Audits and reviews work for accuracy and adherence to internal standards.
  • Provides quality assurance and resolves discrepancies or complaints as needed.
  • Coordinates team scheduling, project assignments, and workload distribution.
  • Implements and supports training, performance, and operational initiatives to maximize team productivity.
  • Supports leadership with reports, insights, and analysis on special projects.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in medical and/or stop-loss underwriting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and organized.
  • Strong time management and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding performance standards.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant underwriting experience or a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
