Position Summary

The Woodlawn Cemetery is a high-volume, fast-paced Cemetery that operates six days a week. We are seeking an experienced, quick-learning professional to jump into this position. The Staff Accountant is a key finance and accounting team member, reporting to the Director of Finance. This individual contributor will be responsible for monthly bank reconciliations and the monthly investment reconciliations for the cemetery’s investment accounts and will also assist in the preparation of financial reports and statements, assist with audits, prepare 990's, and other accounting functions as needed.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Prepare various month-end entries to perform analysis and reconciliations to support the monthly close process.
  • Prepare monthly consolidated financial statements.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual financial statements and assist with regulatory filings.
  • Assist with the preparation of 990 tax filings.
  • Work with our external auditors on annual audits.

Compliance/Regulatory/GL Maintenance

• Maintain ledger and related reports to ensure additions and/or revisions to accounts are appropriately reflected in all GL-based reports and queries and update procedures as needed.

• Contribute to maintaining policies and procedures related to internal controls in place and ensuring compliance with internal control standards.

Month-End/Financial Statements

  • Assists with preparing accurate, timely financial statements following our established schedule and with input from the rest of the accounting department, including comparative budget to actual.
  • Assists with preparing cash flow forecast projections and other performance indicators.
  • Assists in the preparatory work for each financial audit, including preparing and reviewing accounting schedules, preparing journal entries, and communicating with auditors during audits.
  • Spot errors and suggest ways for improving procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP standards.
  • Ensures proper record retention is upheld for all financial records.
  • The staff accountant will also be expected to perform other duties related to the program's administration that are not related to the program's substantive legal work.

Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Experience: MUST have 2 or more years of accounting experience with AP, AR, bank reconciliations, and account reconciliations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Programs.
  • Proficient and working knowledge of accounting software packages. Experience using Sage Intacct is highly desirable.
  •  Grant accounting experience is nice to have.
  • Non-profit accounting experience is nice to have.
  • Proven ability to consistently attend to details and check for accuracy of information.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake all work with a professional attitude.
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally and ethically.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in work style and approach in response to the demands of the situation.
