Position Overview

The Senior Director of Human Resources will be a key strategic partner in supporting the organization’s human capital needs, ensuring that we have the talent, culture, and organizational infrastructure to achieve our mission. This role requires a hands-on leader who is both operationally savvy and mission-driven, bringing expertise in HR strategy, talent management, and organizational development. The Senior Director will oversee all aspects of HR, including managing both corporate employees and volunteers, with a focus on fostering a high-performance culture aligned with our nonprofit goals.

This position is hybrid, based in Downtown Los Angeles, and reports directly to the CFO. The Senior Director of HR will lead a team of three direct reports and play a critical role in developing and executing HR programs that support the overall strategy of the organization.

Job Duties

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a dynamic HR team of 3 direct reports to deliver high-quality HR services across all areas, including talent acquisition, employee engagement, performance management, and volunteer coordination.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to the CFO and other senior leadership on HR matters, providing insights on workforce planning, compensation, employee relations, and organizational development.
  • Champion a mission-driven culture, ensuring that the organization's values are embedded in all HR processes, policies, and initiatives.
  • Oversee all aspects of talent acquisition and retention strategies, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and career development for both corporate staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and implement HR policies and programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring a positive, collaborative, and respectful work environment.
  • Partner with leadership across departments to assess workforce needs, create professional development opportunities, and address employee concerns.
  • Manage the organization's volunteer program, ensuring that volunteers are effectively recruited, trained, supported, and recognized for their contributions to the mission.
  • Develop and manage employee performance programs, ensuring clear expectations, feedback, and recognition systems that align with organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, as well as nonprofit-specific standards.
  • Lead and support initiatives around employee wellness, work-life balance, and staff retention to maintain high levels of morale and job satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience (10+ years) in human resources, with at least 5 years in a leadership or senior HR role, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment.
  • Strong understanding of both corporate HR needs and volunteer management in a nonprofit setting.
  • A mission-driven mindset with a passion for working in the nonprofit sector and advancing the organization’s mission through its people.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a small HR team and delivering results through others.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and external partners.
  • Strong knowledge of HR best practices, including recruitment, employee relations, compensation, performance management, and compliance.
  • Experience in creating and implementing strategies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to turn organizational goals into actionable HR initiatives.
  • Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (required).
  • SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification (preferred).

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid work schedule with a mix of remote work and in-office presence in Downtown Los Angeles.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for special projects or events.
  • Travel may be required for volunteer-related activities or organizational events.
